LAIE DAY FESTIVITIES

LAIE, HAWAII--It was mid July, when the weather was supposed to be (although it wasn't) perfectly balmy amid the sun worshippers cramming into the North Shore.
What is it about this little town, and how does it garner so much attention? (Yes, I'm being facetious here).
Chalk one up for Laie Town again, as the annual Laie Day celebrations kicked into full gear, bringing out the old Kahuku (High School) spirits; so much in fact, that sausage-stuffing-yourself-into-those-high-school-gym-shorts-at-all-costs superseded the reasoning of wearing your "current size". Ahh well--sweat happens.
Although absent for most of the festivities, I did happen upon the basketball tournaments rounding off at the Cannon Activity Center.
THURSDAY NIGHT:
The gym was packed; music was blaring on the loud speakers, and I was feeling a little woozy from the rush of adrenaline in the air--it was a de ja vu of a high school dance all over again--with a pack of gum in my purse, bangs fluffed to the extreme (a la wind tease), I walked by grade school boys that were so big, you'd swear they were next year's NFL hopefuls.
The games ran at fifteen minute intervals--just enough time for the players to catch their second wind before the next game. The winners or losers immediately played the next game if it was their "play off", which was how most of the games ran. It was quite a schedule to keep, and there were a few forfeits and no shows, but all in all, fun in the extreme.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL:
The Cravens were in the mix, hamming it up with two generations of athletes that made me feel my age, and weight to the tenth degree.
MEN'S BASKETBALL:
Michael Jordan once talked about how the years slowed his abilities on the court, but not his love for the game. That little quip best summed up the mix of ball players on the respective men's teams. Although the younger generation played with the enthusiasm of soap box preachers, the girth and gravitous effect of age pinned most of the older genre to a steady pace--not that it was slow by any means--I merely said a steady pace.
FRIDAY NIGHT:
The mood was different--maybe because the attendance was shaved down to half of the previous night's. It was a bit more relaxed, more smooth (think in terms of a "stoner" atmosphere); even the music thumped through a viscous curtain of air.
Between games, my little nieces (cute little bite size morsels) lounged on the gym floor with catlike ease, and professed their love for Laie. Yes girls, I feel ya.
Their team, made up of LaToya Wily and sister, Karla Tailele and sister, Ikakoula cousins, and Amanda, Lia and Lisa (named after yours truly) Fehoko, went on to win the championships. |
